Accra City Tour

1 Day

Overview

Welcome to Accra, the largest capital city of Ghana. Accra holds the administrative and economic capital of Ghana, housing the seat of the government and its agencies.

Modern-day Accra came into existence through the amalgamation of distinct settlements around British James Fort, Dutch Ussher Fort, and Danish Christiansborg. This merger has left the city with a captivating colonial architectural landscape and remarkable landmarks. Accra served as the capital of the British Gold Coast from 1877 to 1957 before Ghana gained its independence and has since transformed into a modern metropolis.

The city’s architecture reflects this rich history, encompassing a spectrum from colonial structures like Christiansborg Castle to modern skyscrapers like Villagio and apartments, highlighting the resilience of its people.

Day 1 :

We start our journey of our vibrant Accra city tour by catching a glimpse of the history at the Independence Square and educate ourselves with how Ghana got its independence from the colonial masters. We traverse the Independence Arch, commissioned by Queen Elizabeth of the United Kingdom as a symbol of our independence and liberation from colonial rule.

We will then proceed to the National Museum of Ghana, which stands as a treasure trove of the nation's history and culture. Upon arriving at the museum, we will be taken through the facility, encountering exhibitions that showcase the nation's rich cultural heritage, from its pre-colonial origins to its resilience to imperialism and colonial rule, and beyond. The facility houses a majestic collection of artifacts, sculptures, textiles, and archaeological finds that give a captivating glimpse into Ghana's history.

Our journey through Accra is far from over as we visit the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and Mausoleum, which is the final resting place of Ghana's first black president and ardent Pan-Africanist who lived and fought for the total liberation of the black race. There is a green park of trees planted by various heads of state who have visited the facility in the past, and the water fountain will bring your camera to life.

For the Pan-Africanism enthusiast, we will visit the W.E.B Du Bois Center and learn about a man who dedicated his life to educate the black race. He settled in Ghana around the year 1961 to 1963 to help his friend Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and educate Ghanaians. The center, which was his home until his death in 1963, is now the final resting place for the giant Pan-Africanist and a museum for his immense work as a Pan-Africanist where people and students come and learn about his legacy.

The engrossing nature of the Makola Market will amaze you as we have a glimpse of traders skillfully bartering their animated exchanges, a testament to the market's rich trading heritage. Here, you can shop for African-inspired textiles, beads, and accessories.

Taking a drive to the Shai Hills, two hours away from the city, we will visit the greenery-lush game reserve where we will be served with breathtaking scenery of baboons, wild antelopes, zebras, and ostriches. We are not left out of options as we can challenge ourselves to the adventure of hiking the hills and visiting the sacred grove inside the hills where we can see medieval inscriptions on stone walls.

The exploitative nature in you will arise when we visit the Happy Art Academy, where you will be given a clump of clay and expected to make magic with guided instruction from a professional clay potter. You will be thrilled with the outcome.

The Artist Alliance Gallery will host you to amazing contemporary African artwork on display. The gallery has been dedicated to bringing attention to traditional and contemporary African art worldwide. You can shop for your African-inspired artwork in a serene environment.

Explore Accra with our nightlife tour where you will be thrilled from loud music at Kona Lounge to Jazz Bar +233 or live performing music at Zen Garden while you are entertained with amazing foods and signature cocktails.

We will explore the night from the famous Oxford Street to affluent suburbs of Labone and East Legon and back to Osu for clubbing. Accra is the city that lazes you.
