Itinerary
Akwaaba (Welcome) to Ghana. Our cultural experience team will meet and help you pack all your luggage after coming through immigration and transfer you to your reserved 4/5-star hotel. After checking into your hotel, our cultural expert team will come and brief you on what to expect on this trip, and then have African vibrant drums beat to our liken, followed by a welcome dinner which is on the host (in-house).
Our intra-country tour begins today with exploring Accra, the capital city of Ghana. Our first stop will be the Independence Square, which stands as a symbol of Ghana's freedom and liberation. At this facility, we will have the opportunity to take great pictures when we climb the Independence Arch at the square, overlooking the colonial city of Osu and the Atlantic Ocean.
We will continue our day by visiting the newly refurbished National Museum, which houses the treasure trove of Ghanaian artifacts, history, and culture. We will pursue our Ghanaian history discovery by visiting the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and Museum, which is dedicated to the life of the first president. The museum is surrounded by trees planted by dignitaries who visited the park, like Nelson Mandela.
We will stop at the W.E.B Du Bois Center, a facility honoring the life of one of the greatest Pan-Africanists who chose to spend the rest of his life in Ghana. The building was his original home but now hosts the museum in his honor.
Our tour on this day will see us early to the Volta Region, and we will visit the Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary where monkeys are believed to be sacred. We will get our bananas from the local vendors and feed these tricky creatures, and we will be overwhelmed by the reception from the villagers.
We will make our second stop at the Wli Waterfalls where our arrival will be welcomed by scenes of lush green vegetation before hiking our way up to the falls, which is in two sections: the lower and upper falls. It will interest you to know that the sectioned falls have different temperatures.
We will make a stop at Mountain Afadzato, the tallest landmark in Ghana standing 885 meters above sea level, making it an ideal place to hike.
Coming back to Accra, we will stop at the Shai Hills National Park to be entertained by exciting scenes of wildlife like antelopes, zebras, ostriches, baboons, and monkeys.
We will take a scheduled early morning flight to Lome, the capital city of Togo. After going through immigration and claiming our bags, we will head to our hotel, get our rooms, and later head back to the city. Our first stops will be at the Independence Square, National Museum, and Craftsmen Village.
Today, we will visit the slave house in Agbodrafo, explore the area, and take a boat to Togoville, a red earth village that was a homeland to numerous slaves taken to Haiti, who were members of the Voodoo cult. Here, you'll find magic remedies and Voodoo charms used to cast powerful spells. We will drive back to the city center and visit the Central Market where traditional articles can be found, visit the Fetish Market where sacred magic products are sold, and the Grand Marche where you can buy authentic pearls.
Early morning, we will drive across the border to Benin. Upon arrival in Benin, we will embark on a city tour and visit the following sites:
The Esplanade des Amazones: A public square home to the Amazons, where we'll take pictures with a 30-meter-high statue built in homage to the world's only female army. These Amazons were part of the Dahomey, a West African empire that existed between 1625 to 1894.
The Remembrance Square: Reveals the fascinating and splendid historic works of the city.
The Mathieu Garden: Formerly the home of the late President of Benin, Mathieu Kerekou, but now transformed into a flowery area with a pleasant scent for visitors.
Sightseeing of a statue of the Wassangari warrior named Bio Guera riding his horse, depicting his bravery to stop the continued exploitation of the colonial power.
We will take a trip to Ouidah, where the slaves used to be traded and the birthplace of Voodoo. We will visit the Voodoo Museum and continue to the Cathedral and the Python's Temple, where we will wrap our necks with giant pythons. Our journey will progress to the Sacred Forest (Kpasse), then to the Gate of No Return, the common grave, and the Tree of Forgetfulness.
Our unforgettable journey to the region of Voodoo spirit will come to an end as we will be heading back to Ghana in the morning on our scheduled flight.
Our day will be a relaxing one, and we will visit the Artist Alliance Gallery to explore contemporary African art on display. Later, we will unwind at the popular La Pleasure Beach.
We will be traveling down south to the cultural and historical city of Kumasi, which is the capital of the Ashanti Kingdom. This kingdom has thrived on its central administration led by the Ashanti King, called Asantehene.
Upon arriving in Kumasi, we will visit the Manhyia Palace Museum, which used to be the official residence of the Ashanti King but is now converted into a museum hosting ancient treasures of the powerful Ashanti Kingdom. We will then go to our hotel and unpack.
We will continue our Ashanti exploration by visiting the Sword Site, where a metal sword has been placed on the ground for centuries, and several efforts to remove it have proved futile. The sword is said to be the unification point of the Ashanti existence. Our next destination will be the Cultural Center, where we will further discover the cultural heritage of the Ashanti Kingdom.
At this moment, we are going to go on a village tour, starting with the Bonwire Kente Weaving Center where Ashanti craftsmanship is at its peak. This art of weaving was discovered from the exploitation of a spider weaving a web. Next is the Ntonso Adinkra Village, where we will learn about the famous Adinkra symbols and have the opportunity to select and print our own cloth.
We will finish our day at Ahwia Wood Carving Village, where the men in the village carve sculptures and stools from wood using ancient techniques.
On our route to Cape Coast, we will make a stop at Lake Bosomtwe, which is the largest natural lake in Ghana. Here, we will take a canoe ride over the lake. Our second stop will be Assin Manso Slave River, where slaves were made to take their last bath on their own land before being taken further south to the slave dungeons. We will continue our journey to Cape Coast and then to our hotel.
We are now in the historic city of Cape Coast, and we will explore this colonial city by visiting Elmina Castle, the first European building in Ghana. It was built in 1471 as a lodge and a trading post and later was expanded to hold more slaves when the slave trade became the order of the day. Our second stop will be a UNESCO Heritage Site, Cape Coast Castle, built and operated by the British. This facility held as many as 300 African men and women at a time, waiting for slave ships to transport them to the so-called New World.
We will then journey through Kakum National Park to take on some adventures. We will endeavor to climb a 7-step footbridge on top of 100-year-old trees. Not forgetting the lush, green vegetation surrounding the forest, it is a reserved forest with many wild animals like forest elephants, antelopes, and many medicinal plants. We will have lunch along the Atlantic Ocean with fresh breeze.
We will be heading back to Accra on day 13 of our tour. Along the way, we will enjoy the fascinating green vegetation and have a glance at Dutch Fort Amsterdam. We will have lunch at Westhills Mall, the biggest mall in West Africa, before we head to our hotel in Accra.
Today is a free day, and you can choose to relax on the beach, get a massage, or go to the Art Center for last-minute shopping for souvenirs or visit the Accra Mall.
